Learn more about potential concerns raised by DEHP,
Health Canada recommendations, and our initiative to remove
DEHP from all Hospira IV gravity and pump administration sets.

What is DEHP?

Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP)
is a plasticizer or softener used to
increase the flexibility of polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
DEHP can potentially leach from PVC
into fluids that come into contact with it*

Medical devices made from PVC,
such as intravenous tubing, typically
contain 20-40% DEHP

There is concern about DEHP
exposure among certain patient groups

*To date, there have been no cases of toxicities/adverse events directly attributed to DEHP,
but Hospira is taking the lead in developing non-DEHP alternatives

How Hospira is taking the lead on DEHP
